Exams Conducted By UPSC

The  Union Public Service Commission conducts several exams for recruitment to various civil services and posts in the Indian government. Some of the important exams conducted by UPSC include:

  • Civil Services Examination (CSE)
  • Indian Forest Service Examination (IFoSE)
  • Engineering Services Examination (ESE)
  • Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS)
  • National Defence Academy Examination (NDA)
  • Indian Economic Service Examination (IES)
  • Indian Statistical Service Examination (ISS)
  • Combined Medical Services Examination (CMS)
  • Naval Academy Examination (NA)
  • Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Examination (CGG)
  • Central Armed Police Forces Examination (CAPF)
  • Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA)

The Civil Services Examination 


The Civil Services Examination consists of two successive stages


    1. Civil Services preliminary Examination (MCQ)for the selection of candidates for the main Examination, and Civil services main examination (written and interview) for selection of candidate for the various services and post.




    • This examination is meant to serve as a screening test only, thus the marks obtained in the preliminary examination are not counted for determining their final order of merit.

    • CSAT paper 2 is qualifying in nature only. Students have to get only 33% to qualify.

    • The number of candidates admitted to the main examination is roughly around 13 to 14 times of the approximate number of vacancies existing in a year.

    • Each paper is of two hours duration. However Blind Candidates will be given an extra time of 20 minutes at each paper.

    • The course content of the syllabus for optional subjects are of the degree level.

    1. a) The candidate will be interviewed by a board who will have before them a record of his career. He will be asked questions on matters of general interest. The object of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers. The test is intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate. In broad terms this is really an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities but also social traits and his interest in current affairs. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.
